Yarsagumba with its Latin name cordyceps sinesis literally means summer plant and winter insect in Tibetan. Before the rainy season begins, spores of the cordyceps mushroom settle on the heads of caterpillars’ that lives underground. The fungus gets so much into the body of the caterpillars’ that it grows out through its head and drains all the energy from the insect and ultimately it dies.

Yarsagumba, Yarshagumba or Yarchagumba is a rare and unique herb that grows in the meadows above 3,500 meters (11,483 feet) in the Himalayan region of Nepal. There are various types of famous medicinal plants found in Nepal but the popularity of yarsagumba is simply overwhelming. For the last couple of years, the trade of yarsagumba is increasing and it has been regarded as an expensive life saving tonic. Headache, toothache or any other disease - yarsagumba is the remedy. And not only that, it is also believed to be a cure for sexual impotency – a Himalayan Herbal Viagra.

Every year during May and June, thousands of villagers from remote areas risking their own lives head for high mountains to collect yarsagumba. (From Visit Nepal.com)

There are over 680 documented species of the sac fungus genus Cordyceps, and one of the best known of these is Cordyceps sinensis, colloquially known as caterpillar fungus. The scientific name's etymology is from the Latin cord "club", ceps "head", and sinensis "from China". The fungus is known in Tibetan as yartsa gunbu or yatsa gunbu.

Caterpillar fungi are the result of a parasitic relationship between the fungus and the larva of theghost moth genus Thitarodes, several species of which live on the Tibetan Plateau (Tibet, Qinghai, West-Sichuan, SW-Gansu & NW Yunnan, all in China, and the Himalayas India, Nepal, Bhutan). The fungus germinates in living organisms (in some cases the larvae), kills and mummifies the insect, and then the cordyceps grows from the body of the insect. It is known in the West as amedicinal mushroom and its use has a long history in Traditional Chinese medicine as well asTraditional Tibetan medicine.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Transformers: Dark of the Moon (also known as Transformers 3) is the 2011 Americanscience fiction/action movie in the Transformers movie series, directed by Michael Bay and produced by Steven Spielberg. It is the sequel to Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and is scheduled for release on June 29, 2011. The movie will be presented in regular 2D, Real D 3D and IMAX, featuring Dolby Surround 7.1 sound.

Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson and John Turturro are set to reprise their starring roles, with Peter Cullen returning as the voice of Optimus Prime and Hugo Weaving returning as the voice of Megatron. Ehren Kruger, who collaborated in the writing of the last film, was again involved in the writing. Despite having initially been confirmed for the film, and with the movie already into principal photography, it was announced that Megan Fox would not be reprising her role from the previous two films. With Fox's character Mikaela being dropped, Sam was assigned a new love interest, who will be played by English model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Also, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, having written the last two films, did not return for this installment in the series which Orci had earlier somewhat anticipated, fearing the duo would "risk getting stale". Bay has stated this would be his last installment in the series. In May 2011 it was announced that Paramount Pictures had bumped Transformers: Dark of the Moon 's release date of July 1, 2011 two days earlier, June 29, in order to receive an early response to footage. It has been announced that the movie will premiere at 9PM on June 28 in 3D and IMAX theatres, nationwide.

Vancouver's top cop blasts 'riot expert'

ERICA BULMAN, QMI AGENCY

FIRST POSTED: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22, 2011 1:04:02 EDT AM

VANCOUVER - A day after tough questions about political interference in the tactical handling of violent post-hockey riots, Vancouver’s police chief tried to discredit his most vocal critic.

Chief Jim Chu released an all-staff memo Tuesday, accusing “self-proclaimed riot expert” Bob Whitelaw of misrepresenting his expertise to the media.

Whitelaw, hired by the provincial police commission during its review of the 1994 Stanley Cup riot, has publicly criticized Vancouver Police Department's planning for Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals and its handling of the ensuing riot.

“Mr. Whitelaw lives and works in Ottawa,” Chu said in the memo. “He has never met with me or any senior staff to learn what we have done in the 17 years since the 1994 riot.”

The attack on Whitelaw comes as Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and Chu are facing questions about decisions that attracted upward of 100,000 people downtown to watch the Cup final on jumbo screens in live fan sites.

Critics have said insufficient numbers of police were deployed and reinforcements arrived too late to stop the escalating violence.

On Tuesday, city manager Penny Ballem was accused of meddling in police tactical decisions in the command centre. Ballem admitted she was in the room that night but only communicated with city crews and didn’t direct police actions.

“This is really a red herring,” said Daniel Fontaine, former chief of staff to ex-Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan. “Releasing this lengthy letter is a sign they’re worried public opinion is turning on them.

“I think people will be cynical because of the timing of this attack.”

David Edgar, former chairman of the now-defunct B.C. Police Commission, said Whitelaw was hired as a “wordsmith” to assemble the 1994 report, and the Ottawa-based consultant’s claims he’d written the report and was an investigator “bordered on fraud.”

Whitelaw was surprised by Edgar's words, and provided QMI Agency a glowing thank-you letter he said Edgar wrote upon the review’s conclusion.

An independent reviewer, yet to be named, is due to examine the events that led to the riot, including police crowd control planning and alcohol availability. (From Toronto Sun: http://www.torontosun.com/2011/06/22/vancouvers-top-cop-blasts-riot-expert)
