Non-resident Nepalis who gathered for a regional meeting in Sydney have announced that they would invest on a 100-mw hidroelectricity project in Nepal very soon. The project has received enthusiastic response from NRNs across the globe as an initial fund of Rs. 200 million has already been collected within the few days of announcement, said leaders of the NRN in Australia.
Upendra Mahato, a known NRN leader and businessman based in Russia and the man behind this new Diaspora initiative, pledged to invest at least fifty percent of the total cost on his own. Mahato, who was in Sydney to attend the conference, confirmed of his investment plan. "We are in touch with the government officials to finalise which project we are going to invest on. Hopefully, we will soon sort it out once we gather enough investment capital for a 100-mw project," Mahato told the Post.
The three-day jamboree of NRN concluded on Sundey culminating in a "Nepal Festival" that saw a turn out of over 10,000 Nepali diaspora and students, foreigners and local visitors. The event also came up with a Sydney Declaration that called on Nepal's political parties to institutionalise the achievement of democratic movement of 2006 and the NRN community to increase investment in Nepal. Ganesh KC, Chairman of NRN Australia said the Nepal Festival organised every two years in September in Darling Harbour has been extremely popular in Australia as it has been not only a venue for sharing and networking among NRNs but also a platform for hundreds of exhibitors to showcase their products. The festival also featured dance and other cultural performances by Nepali actors.
